Fantasy Short Story

Cold water woke Levi from a fitful sleep. He gasped for air, swiping the water from his face. A man stood over him laughing. His clothes were that of a soldier, and Levi knew somehow they had captured him, again.

He shrank back into the corner of the jail cell he found himself in. Wrapping his arms around his knees, he drew them in tight trying to ward off the cold. The thought of giving up crossed his mind, but he was no quitter. Somehow, he would find a way to escape before his fate was sealed in stone.

For the next two days the guards threw cold water on him every time they caught him sleeping. He hadn’t had more than a few hours sleep for almost three days. Unless you counted when he was knocked out, but Levi didn’t.

With very little sleep, it was getting harder and harder to keep his eyes open and he eventually drifted off. The banging of the steel door as it hit the stone wall jerked him awake. He braced himself for the cold water he knew was coming.

“Get up.”

Levi squinted as he looked at the chubby man standing before him. He wanted to be defiant, but had no strength left to fight. Placing his hands on the dirt floor her pushed himself up. He must have been moving to slow, the man grabbed the back of his shirt and yanked him to his feet.
