Three Things You Should Do As A Writer.
Okay, so there are probably way more than three things you should be doing as a writer, but these might be the three most important ones. The ones that take you from being a good writer to an amazing writer.
1. Read, read, read.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the question, “If I don’t like to read, can I still be a writer?” The answer is, sure, you can still write, but it probably isn’t going to be as good as it could be if you read. Now, that doesn’t mean you have to read fiction, although if you write fiction, it’s helpful too, so you can keep up to date on what’s out there and what sells.
Let’s say you don’t like reading fiction, that’s okay. There are lots of other books out there to choose from. If you want to be a better writer, try reading books on the craft of writing. Pick up a dictionary or thesaurus. Do you know how many new words you can learn just from glancing at one of these books? It’s a lot.
No rule says to be a fiction writer you have to read fiction. There really is no rule saying to be a writer you have to read anything at all. But the fact is, you could be a better writer if you read.
