The Coming Storm

A short story

The leaves rustled, and the trees swayed. A cold wind blew through the town, bringing with it a pounding rain. Susie wrapped her coat tighter around herself, trying to ward off the chill that seeped into her bones.

Spring was the worst time for storms. She quickened her pace as the wind intensified, swirling dirt, leaves, and trash up around Susie. Rain dripped down onto her face from her hood, making it hard to see. She swiped at the water trailing down her cheeks, but the more she wiped it away, the more there was.

The door to her little house came into view, and she smiled with relief. The smile quickly faded as her eyes focused on something in the distance. In the flashes of lightning, a tornado reaches down from the sky to touch the earth, tearing up everything in its path with its deadly hands.

Her heart pounded as she scurried for the door that would take her down into the basement, into safety. She took the steps two at a time as the wind howled. Things banged above her as she cowered in the corner. Then, everything was quiet.

Her hands trembled as she opened the door and let herself out. A gasp flew from her lips at the sight. The tornado was gone, and so was her house.
