Sometimes The Best Writing Advice Can Turn Out To Be Bad
Writing advice is given with the best of intentions
We’ve all gotten advice that sounded good, but after you start putting it into practice, realize it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. There is a lot of advice out there for writers, some good, some bad. It’s hard to weed through all of it and know what you should be implementing.
Every writer is different, and what works for one, doesn’t always work for another. I can’t tell you what advice you should listen to, only you can do that. But I can expand on some of it to help you make better choices about what works for you.
The first bit of writing advice I ever got was, “the more you write, the better you’ll get”. This isn’t bad advice, really. It just needs to be expanded on. Writing the same way every day without getting any kind of feedback isn’t necessarily going to make you a better writer. It might make you a faster writer, which can be helpful. The fact is, you need someone to look at your writing and pick out the things that need work. If you write fifty stories but never get the feedback that you don’t describe anything, how will you know you need to work on it? If you are a writer starting out, or a seasoned professional, you need someone to read your stories and give you honest feedback.
