I survived NaNoWriMo
I may have survived the grueling thirty-day challenge, but I didn’t hit my fifty-thousand-word goal. I ended with forty-eight thousand. I was so close, but I can’t say I was disappointed. I managed to write every single day, which is something I haven’t done in a really long time.
Even though I was close to finishing, and did manage to write every day, there are still some things I would do differently.
I tend to be more of a pantser when it comes to my writing, but for NaNo I always make a very basic outline. I did the same thing this year. The problem was, I didn’t follow that outline at all after the first two chapters. I ended up re-outlining several times throughout the month as my story changed.
So next year, I will still make my outline, and at some point, I will probably throw it out the window and pants my way through, but instead of taking time to redo my outline, I’ll just keep writing. The time I took to redo everything, could have been used to write the story itself, and considering the fact I really didn’t follow the outline, it was a waste of time for me.
If you are one of those people who can outline and stick with it, great! Don’t change anything. It just doesn’t work for me, and there is nothing wrong with that. Every writer has their way of doing things. We all come with little quarks. Don’t try to change your…
