If you struggle with shyness, don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s estimated 17 million American adults suffer from some form of shyness.

Shyness is actually a type of social anxiety that plagues many people. We always think of a child as being shy, but adults can be shy too. Never fear, there are ways you can combat your shyness and help you deal with your social anxiety.

I was a shy kid. I carried my shyness with me well into my teenage years, where it developed into a full out social phobia. It wasn’t that I didn’t like people, I just didn’t like being around anyone I didn’t know for longer than a few minutes. It greatly affected my life

When I got old enough to understand that I had social anxiety, I started finding ways to work on my shyness and social phobia. Here are a few tips and tricks that might help you if you have problems with being shy.

Be confident.

Confidence comes through actions and practice. So don’t avoid social interaction. Start slow. I started by just saying hi to the cashier when I would pay for my gas. I know most of you are thinking, that’s no big deal, but for someone who’s stomach does summersaults just thinking about talking to someone, it was a big deal. Once I was comfortable with that, I started asking how are you? Which didn’t always work about because…
