How Important Is Breakfast?

We have all heard the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” but is it really?

Certain studies have linked breakfast to a smaller waistline and improved health. However, most of those studies have only be observational. Meaning there was no clear answer to whether it really made you skinnier or healthier.

People trying to lose weight often think that skipping breakfast is a good way to cut calories. Some studies suggest that skipping breakfast my actually lead to weight gain.

When a person skips breakfast they tend to eat more at lunch and supper and snack more during the day. However, a controlled study determined that there was very little difference in either weight gain or lose between people who ate breakfast and those who didn’t.

So it would seem that if you are trying to lose weight skipping breakfast may not help.

Now that we have determined it makes very little difference whether you eat breakfast or not lets talk about late morning snacking.

In one study participants where asked if they ate any thing before lunch. What some people thought of as a snack other people thought of as breakfast. The study indicated that whether you call it breakfast or a snack, eating before lunch lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes.
